Grandpa and I built this boat over a summer vacation in his shop when I was 13 years old. The Penguin is a dinghy class racer, 11'5" and carries 72 sq/ft of sail. It is well rigged with vang, outhaul, adjustable stays and has a 4' centerboard and at about 165 lbs is a very lively boat and a blast to sail. We built the self rescue version which traps 9 cu/ft of air beneath the deck so if capsized you can right the boat and the water will flow out the scuppers in the transom so you can get back underway without any help. (A very helpful feature for a novice... a feature which got lots of use!). It was registered with the Internation Penguin Dinghy Association, measured and granted its official number. The photos at the dock with myself and my cousin Phil Chorlian were taken at Richmond County Yacht Club in Staten Island, NY where I kept her for ten years. |
